Vic: Man to stand trial for attempted murder of ex-Soviet cop

MELBOURNE, Aug 20 AAP - A Melbourne man who allegedly shot a former Soviet police officerturned informer was today committed to stand trial for attempted murder.

Michael Goldman, 55, of Hampton, was also committed in the Melbourne Magistrates Courtto stand trial for several other offences, including intentionally causing serious injury,recklessly causing serious injury and unlawful assault.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

During this week's committal hearing, the court was told the former Soviet police officerhelped Goldman and others commit thefts and burglaries at building sites in 2001 and lastyear.

But when he was arrested for burglary he offered to become a Victoria Police informerand wear a recording device.

On July 10 last year he went to Goldman's house in Highett Road, Hampton, where Goldmanallegedly shot him in his side.

The informer is now in the witness protection program and gave evidence via a videolink through an interpreter.

Magistrate Bill O'Day committed Goldman to stand trial in the Victorian Supreme Court.

Goldman made no application for bail and was remanded in custody to appear at a directionshearing on December 2.
